Founder
Canadian cryptocurrency founder, based in Dubai. In crypto since 2014, when he created DopeCoin. Crypto Billings was the payments company he built out of that experience, from December 2017 to January 2023.
Who he is
Adam Howell created DopeCoin on 14 February 2014, one of the earliest cannabis cryptocurrencies and one of the earliest coins ever listed on CoinMarketCap. It was a fork of Blackcoin's proof-of-stake code, announced on BitcoinTalk like every coin of that era, and it drew coverage from Fox Business, HuffPost and PC Mag. Coinbase's asset page still names him as the founder.
He relaunched the coin in January 2017 and built a small set of companies around it over the next two years. The Smoke Exchange, an advertising exchange that took payment in crypto, grew into Grow Advertising, which went on to serve more than a billion ad impressions. Crypto Billings, the subject of this site, was the payments piece. In 2021 he founded SuperDoge, a charity token on BNB Chain that donated more than $150,000 in its first 72 hours and was covered by Bloomberg and CNBC. Before any of that he founded Unacell, a mobile subscription-commerce company.
He is Canadian, has lived in more than a dozen countries, and is based in Dubai, where he builds Web3 infrastructure for institutional digital-asset flows under the UAE's VARA and ADGM frameworks.
What he built here
Customers paid to the merchant's own addresses. Crypto Billings priced the order, showed the address and marked the order paid. It never held a balance for anyone. In 2017 that was an unusual choice; most gateways wanted the float.
No merchant fee and no customer transaction fee. A small store trying crypto for the first time should not pay for the experiment.
The plugin went on the official WordPress.org directory under GPLv3, with four releases between 2018 and 2021 and two five-star reviews. Everything else went through the HTTP API, which an outside developer wrote a PHP client for.
Bitcoin, Ethereum and DopeCoin from the start, Bitcoin Cash from version 1.0.2, priced at the live CoinMarketCap rate at checkout.
He wound the service down in January 2023, once the mainstream processors had started accepting crypto themselves. The record of what it was stays on this site.
